Proactive Research
Most cities or towns now resources available for new residents, including:

Chamber of Commerce
Request an information packet: maps, a list of attractions and restaurants plus contact information for realtors, apartments, utility companies and banks.

Search the Internet and the library
There is likely plenty of information, including history, political environment, educational system, crime rate, growth rate and cost of living.

Prepare to visit by making appointments
Plan to visit the local schools, PTA, parks, religious organizations, community organizations and available housing. Schedule in advance with the appropriate people who can help during your visit. In addition, drive around the community to get a sense of what it would be like to live there.

Consider the geographic location
Is the community rural or urban? What is your preference? There usually is the option to live in either area and commute to work. Therefore, consider how far you are willing to commute – and don’t forget public transportation. It is available and reliable?

Evaluate the amenities
Are the amenities and activities important to you available? Look online to find out your proximity to schools, entertainment areas, shopping, religious organizations, healthcare, fitness centers, etc.

Planning your move

The following is a small list of the many tasks that will need to be addressed when moving to a new location:

Your home
Once you've decided to relocate, you need to find a suitable living situation in the new city. If buying a home, contact local realtors to locate potential properties. There are numerous resources available to help you determine the best locations and mortgage rates. The same is true if you plan to rent. In addition to classified ads, seek the help of a reputable rental agency. Also, check with your company and find out what services they provide in terms of buying or selling your existing home.

The physical move
Contact movers who are insured and reputable. The last thing you want is to lose or damage your personal property. Check with your company to find out if they cover moving expenses.

Change of address
The post office will forward your mail to the new address. Mail that requests a change of address will be automatically sent a card with your new address. However, you may want to contact banks, creditors and magazines with new contact information in advance.

Utilities
Obtain the names and numbers of the various utility companies (electric, water, gas, cable and telephone) prior to the move to arrange for service. Also, contact all of your current utility companies and make sure they stop your service and refund any outstanding deposits.

Schools
Ensure your realtor provides you with a list and contact information of several reputable schools in the area. Make sure to find out about public transportation to and from school if needed.

Health
Obtain the medical and dental records for all family members, including pets. Let your insurance companies know you are moving.
